Harland & Wolff Fines Book; 1903 – 1915

This little notebook is an example of the type kept by a Time Office. Offenders would be reported by the Foreman or “Hat” and their name, board number and trade would be recorded in the notebook, along with the fine imposed and the nature of the offence.     “Loafing” was a regular offence as was “Boiling Can”. The first refers to being caught doing nothing or idling, the second to boiling water to make tea before the appropriate time. It is a fascinating little insight into life in the ‘Yard’ in the early years of the 20th century and gives us lists of names, men who worked there, riveters, drillers, foremen alike. Can you find your family name? Any queries, contact us through our website Message Forum.    In the meantime I will only be uploading the years :-
