HISTORY
The Belfast Titanic Society evolved from the Ulster Titanic Society and came into being August 2003. The Ulster Titanic Society was formed in the Linen Hall Library, Belfast in 1992 and recently it was felt by the majority of its world-wide membership that we should change our name to reflect the unique link with the place of Titanic's birth - Belfast.
HONORARY
MEMBERS
The Society has a special class of membership, a group of people with unique links to Titanic. These are the people who had the honour of seeing Titanic at first hand when she was in Belfast or where she now lies on the seabed. These invited Honorary Members are a link to the past, that age which saw Titanic slip into her natural element for the first time and leave Belfast for the last time. A time when the whole country was proud of the Yard's magnificent achievement. They are also a link with the present and the modern technology that allowed Titanic to be found at the bottom of the Atlantic.
The Society is the only organisation in the world which can boast such a link and we are the envy of other societies in this regard. When we come across a person who qualifies for this class of membership, we ask them to either prepare a talk or write down an account of their visit to see Titanic. Through this we gain an immense amount of knowledge from first-hand accounts about the ship, the Yard and Belfast life at that time. Our CQD Titanic magazine often carries accounts of these wonderful sights as described by our
honorary members.
RESEARCH
The Belfast Titanic Society has a growing research department which aims to unearth more information about Titanic in its place of birth. The Belfast Titanic Society is at the forefront of the present work to learn more about the ship and its local context. The Society welcomes inquires about its work and, of course, any other information that may be of help to increase our knowledge of RMS Titanic.
